The Ship's Third Officer  was instructed to take charge of Lifeboat 5 by Chief Officer Murdoch. He intended to return to collect further passengers from the water but was convinced otherwise by the occupants of Lifeboat 5. He felt burdened with guilt for the rest of his life.
